Boehringer Ingelheim expands flexible PREVICOX dosing in US dogs

16/10/2026

A tablet redesign can look like a modest product change, but in chronic canine pain management it can influence prescribing flexibility, client affordability and medication waste. Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced a new quarterable Snap-Tab design for PREVICOX chewable tablets in the United States after FDA approval, positioning the update around more precise, weight-based dosing for dogs.

The 7 October announcement covers PREVICOX, or firocoxib, a COX-2 selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug approved for control of pain and inflammation associated with canine osteoarthritis and with soft-tissue or orthopaedic surgery. Double scoring is intended to let veterinarians divide the 57 mg and 227 mg tablets into quarters, creating additional dose options. Boehringer Ingelheim said the change allows prescription for dogs as small as seven pounds.

The dosage flexibility has a commercial logic beyond convenience. A broader usable weight range can reduce the need to improvise doses across different presentations and may help clinics align dispensing more closely with an individual animal's requirement. For owners managing long-term osteoarthritis, a dosing format that better fits the patient can be relevant to treatment adherence and the perceived value of care, although individual prescribing decisions remain with the veterinarian.

The company also highlighted material and supply-chain effects. Once divided, a tablet may be stored in its container for up to one month. The bottle will move to an industry-standard round format, become taller and no longer include cotton. Boehringer Ingelheim said the changes are intended to reduce waste, material use and supply complexity over the product lifecycle.

The formulation, full-tablet strengths, bottle counts and child-resistant, senior-friendly closure are unchanged. Rollout begins progressively through 2026 and 2027 with the 227 mg and 57 mg 60-count presentations. This is a useful reminder that mature companion-animal brands can still create value through administration design: the clinical molecule is unchanged, but the economics of dosing, inventory and use can be materially improved.
