In this short expert interview recorded during the 3rd Fatro & Güneşli Regional Animal Health Symposium, we discuss the current global picture of salmonella in poultry, its economic impact on the poultry business, and what it means for animal and human health through the One Health lens. Prof. Antonio Camarda explains that while control programs have helped reduce salmonella prevalence in many regions, the disease remains present in numerous countries — with particularly high impact noted in parts of Africa, Asia, and some European countries. The conversation also looks at how different salmonella types may affect poultry differently (including variations between brown and white chickens), and why effective control requires thinking in both directions.

Mycoplasma is often treated as “background” in many production systems. But in this interview, a veterinary professor makes a sharp economic point: the global impact of mycoplasma is likely underestimated, partly because in high-prevalence regions it becomes “accepted” rather than measured. A key challenge is benchmarking. When a pathogen is widespread, it can be difficult to find a true mycoplasma-negative reference group to compare performance against. That makes losses harder to quantify and easier to ignore — even when they continue to erode productivity and increase health costs. In the conversation, the professor suggests the true global impact is at least in the millions — and potentially in the billions of dollars, once you consider the cumulative effects across regions, species, and production cycles.

The UK veterinary sector is at a crossroads. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is weighing reforms that could fundamentally reshape how veterinary care is priced and delivered. Among the measures under discussion: capping medicine mark-ups, abolishing prescription fees, and banning incentive payments tied to certain treatments. The move comes amid mounting consumer frustration — average veterinary bills have risen by more than 60% in the past eight years (The Guardian).
Independent practices argue that compliance with new regulations would impose disproportionate costs, especially on smaller clinics with already thin margins. The fear is that rural and lower-income regions could face veterinary “deserts” if smaller businesses close. Larger corporate groups may absorb compliance costs more easily, but they too face pressure: investors expect profitability to remain high even under tighter controls.

As global temperatures rise and climate patterns shift, heat stress in farm animals has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges to livestock production and animal welfare. Especially in intensive production systems, the combination of high animal density, poor ventilation, and climate-induced heat waves has made heat stress a recurring threat, reducing productivity and increasing health costs. This article summarizes current understanding around the behavioral and physiological adaptations of animals under heat stress, its impact on gut health, and the role of neuroendocrine systems in modulating this complex response.
1. Heat Stress and the Animal Response
Farm animals are endothermic homeotherms, maintaining internal temperature within a narrow range. When exposed to high ambient temperatures, they activate a cascade of physiological and behavioral mechanisms:
Proteins are one of the cornerstones of animal nutrition and play a role in many critical processes. In addition to achieving the targeted performance in farm animals, they are the basic element needed in the synthesis of hormones and enzymes that regulate physiological processes and in the strength of immune system functions.

The rumen is often described as the “powerhouse” of the cow, and the cow obtains three-quarters of its energy from here. A balanced rumen environment is critical to the performance and health of the ruminant. The primary goals in the ruminant diet should be to provide a well-maintained and stable rumen environment, as well as to include sufficient and appropriate nutrients in the ration. At the same time, the development of correct feeding strategies has become an essential issue in the livestock industry in terms of increasing the supply-demand ratio and cost bills, and in achieving meat-milk production targets.
