Wearable Tech and AI Reshape Livestock Health Management

22/08/2025

Digitalisation is moving fast into livestock farming, with a growing economic footprint. In the United States, dairy farmers are increasingly using wearable devices for cattle health monitoring. These sensors track temperature, activity levels, and rumination, giving early warnings of diseases such as avian influenza or metabolic issues. The Wall Street Journal recently reported how the technology has already helped farms prevent outbreaks and cut losses, proving its practical value on the ground.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is adding another layer. Algorithms now support precision feeding by analysing farm data and adjusting feed formulations to match the exact nutritional needs of herds. This reduces waste, increases efficiency, and helps farmers achieve better production with fewer resources. Reports from a-connect and Cryoport underline that AI and Internet of Things (IoT) applications are expected to become standard tools in poultry and cattle management over the next decade.

From an economic standpoint, the savings are tangible. Health issues can account for up to 20% of total production costs in dairy operations. By lowering veterinary bills, reducing mortality, and stabilising yields, wearable and AI-based solutions bring measurable returns on investment. For agribusiness, the challenge lies in affordability and scaling adoption, particularly in emerging markets where margins remain tight.

Still, the direction is clear: technology is reshaping animal health management. Companies offering integrated digital platforms — combining sensors, AI, and feed solutions — are positioning themselves at the heart of a new efficiency-driven livestock economy.
