HIPRA Opens New Global Biotechnology Campus in Girona

26/09/2025

On September 18th, HIPRA inaugurated the HIPRA Campus in Aiguaviva, Girona (Spain). The site spans over 114,000 m², making it one of Europe’s most ambitious biotechnology hubs, combining research, development, manufacturing, and strategic operations under one roof.

The project reflects HIPRA’s long-term commitment to innovation in animal and human health. Founded in 1954 in Amer (Girona), the company has become a global leader in vaccines and diagnostics, exporting to more than 40 countries and generating revenues above €300 million. With the new Campus, HIPRA seeks to scale solutions that address both current and future global health challenges.

Campus in Numbers

• 28,000 m² built in Phase 1, including 7,500 m² of R&D labs, tripling HIPRA’s former research capacity.

• A Business & Technology building (8,000 m²) for device production, offices, and data management.

• Two major biomanufacturing units:

• Bacterial Cultures Unit 6 (5,570 m², BSL2+) with fermenters and bioreactors up to 2,000 L.

• Cell Culture Platform Unit 1 (4,285 m²) for antigen production, recombinant proteins, and monoclonal antibodies.

• In total, more than 9,000 m² dedicated to large-scale biological manufacturing.

The Campus also integrates sustainability-focused auxiliary buildings for energy, water, and waste management, underscoring HIPRA’s ESG commitments.

Economic & Strategic Impact

HIPRA has invested over €500 million into the project. At full capacity, the Campus is expected to create more than 1,000 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs, with 400 professionals already working onsite. Beyond economic growth, the Campus strengthens Europe’s health sovereignty, with HIPRA playing a key role in initiatives such as EU-FAB and Speedcell to accelerate vaccine readiness.

With this move, HIPRA positions the Campus as a benchmark centre for European biotechnology, reinforcing its autonomy, global competitiveness, and leadership in animal health innovation.
