Salmonella in Poultry: Global Prevalence, Economic Impact & One Health

27/01/2026

In this short expert interview recorded during the 3rd Fatro & Güneşli Regional Animal Health Symposium, we discuss the current global picture of salmonella in poultry, its economic impact on the poultry business, and what it means for animal and human health through the One Health lens.

Prof. Antonio Camarda explains that while control programs have helped reduce salmonella prevalence in many regions, the disease remains present in numerous countries — with particularly high impact noted in parts of Africa, Asia, and some European countries. The conversation also looks at how different salmonella types may affect poultry differently (including variations between brown and white chickens), and why effective control requires thinking in both directions.

Another key point is the role of structured plans to identify positive animals and reduce overall circulation of microorganisms — alongside a possible long-term research direction: developing breeding lines less sensitive to salmonella, especially for Salmonella gallinarum.

🎥 Topics covered:

  • Current global prevalence of salmonella
  • Economic losses and business impact in poultry production
  • Differences between salmonella types and susceptibility in poultry
  • One Health: protecting human health while controlling poultry salmonella
  • Control plans, identification, and reduction strategies
  • Research direction: less sensitive breeding lines
