In a bold step toward driving sustainability across the animal feed value chain, the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) launched the first edition of its “Voices of GFLI” series by spotlighting dsm-firmenich’s cutting-edge platform, Sustell. In this opening interview, Dr. David Nickell—Vice President of Sustainability and Business Solutions at dsm-firmenich—shares how GFLI data fuels actionable insights to reshape the animal nutrition industry.

Sustell, developed by dsm-firmenich’s Animal Nutrition & Health business, is a certified ISO-compliant life cycle assessment (LCA) platform. By integrating the GFLI database, it enables feed professionals, advisors, and even retailers to calculate and reduce the environmental footprints of animal proteins. “GFLI’s data is foundational—feed can make up 50–80% of the footprint in animal protein production,” says Dr. Nickell.

But Sustell is more than just a tool. It’s a gateway to monetizing environmental data, aligning with carbon markets and enabling dynamic recipe optimization for both nutrition and sustainability. With seamless connections to formulation software like Bestmix and Format Solutions, Sustell empowers users across the supply chain to act on credible, verifiable sustainability metrics.

Dr. Nickell, also a GFLI Board Member and IFIF board contributor, underscores the need for ever more granular, verifiable, and regionally relevant data. “The industry is moving towards real-time, batch-level footprinting—this will become the norm,” he notes.

As GFLI eyes growth and enhanced data precision, the collaboration with Sustell and stewardship by leaders like Dr. Nickell will be instrumental. Together, they are shaping not just a cleaner feed industry—but a smarter, data-driven one.
