New comparative data put time to meaningful tick reduction at the centre of the monthly parasite-protection conversation - and of the commercial contest for veterinary recommendations.

The companion-animal parasite market is usually framed around breadth of protection. Elanco's latest Credelio Quattro data instead sharpen the question of speed of protection: how quickly does a treatment meaningfully reduce the tick burden after a dog is exposed? That is an economically relevant distinction for veterinary practices, where prevention recommendations must turn complex clinical evidence into a clear recurring-care decision for owners.

In results released on 22 July, Elanco said a 2026 head-to-head study in Parasites & Vectors found Credelio Quattro was the only product tested to achieve a statistically significant reduction of black-legged ticks within eight hours of infestation. The comparison evaluated Credelio Quattro against Simparica Trio and NexGard Plus at four, eight, 12, 24 and 48 hours after treatment and reinfestation. At day 28, the reported time point for consistent superior efficacy versus untreated controls was eight hours for Credelio Quattro, 12 hours for Simparica Trio and 24 hours for NexGard Plus.

The company also pointed to earlier research on the lone star tick, in which lotilaner - the active ingredient in Credelio and Credelio Quattro - reached consistent superior efficacy at 12 hours on day 0 and day 21, and at eight hours on day 28. Those results concern the active ingredient study rather than a direct Credelio Quattro comparison, a distinction that matters when translating the findings into product-level claims.

The commercial significance lies in the monthly refill conversation. Elanco notes that Lyme disease transmission from black-legged ticks typically occurs 24 to 48 hours after attachment. A prevention product that can credibly demonstrate rapid tick control through the end of a dosing interval gives clinics a tangible adherence message: coverage is not only about whether a dog receives a dose, but whether the protection profile remains dependable when the next dose is due.

That does not make speed of tick reduction the sole purchasing criterion. Product indication, safety information, local parasite risk, age and weight restrictions, and the individual animal's history remain central to a veterinarian's recommendation. Lotilaner, like other isoxazolines, carries a labelled caution for dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. Still, as tick geography and owner concern expand, time-based evidence on tick reduction is becoming a more valuable piece of the competitive toolkit - clinically, commercially and in the trust practices build with clients.
