Gender Sorting Gains Momentum in Broiler Hatcheries

Automation is reshaping poultry hatcheries, with gender sorting emerging as one of the technologies attracting growing industry attention. The shift reflects a broader effort to improve flock consistency, operational planning and the use of labour and resources from the earliest stage of broiler production.

A recent meeting in Utrecht with HIPRA executives placed feather-based gender sorting at the centre of this transition. Sergi Bosch, Digital Health Director at HIPRA, outlined the expanding role of hatchery automation and the development of HatchFlex, the company's new automated sorting system.

Around 25% of broiler chicks worldwide are currently sexed. That share could rise significantly as automated technologies become more accessible and hatcheries gain practical routes to integrating them into existing production flows.

HatchFlex was developed to automate the process by capturing an individual image of every chick and using it to identify males and females. Separating chicks by gender can support more uniform flocks, stronger production performance and greater operational efficiency.

From an animal health economics perspective, the value extends beyond reducing labour requirements. Greater consistency at the beginning of the production cycle can improve planning, help businesses allocate resources more precisely and support operational decisions based on more standardised groups.

The system's longer-term potential may also reach beyond gender sorting. High-quality images collected from individual chicks could form a valuable data foundation for future digital applications. As image analysis and automation advance, the same information may support additional assessments related to chick quality, health and production management.

For HIPRA Türkiye, the technology also represents an opportunity to strengthen the domestic poultry industry's access to automated decision-support tools. Serkan Bicer, General Manager of HIPRA Türkiye, framed HatchFlex as part of a wider technological shift:

“As technology and automation become increasingly important for the future of the poultry industry, we believe that with HatchFlex, HIPRA will become one of the strongest solution partners for the industry in Türkiye.”

HatchFlex reflects a broader transition across poultry production. Hatcheries are increasingly becoming data-driven environments in which automation can support faster processes, greater consistency and more efficient use of labour and resources.

As adoption expands, gender sorting could become an important component of modern broiler production. The next generation of hatcheries is likely to be shaped not only by automated equipment, but also by the data gathered from every chick moving through the production system.
