How Precision Feeding Is Reshaping Broiler Production

At UBEK 2025, The Animal Economics sat down for an exclusive interview with Aaron Cowieson, Senior Science Fellow and Head of Digital Consultancy & Solutions at DSM-Firmenich, to explore one of the most impactful shifts in poultry production: precision feeding.

Cowieson emphasized that in the past 2–3 years, feeding strategies have undergone a major transformation. The rise of automation, digitalization, and access to real-time data—combined with AI, algorithms, and machine learning—has enabled feeding systems to respond more accurately to the specific needs of individual birds.

“Nutritionists have always aimed for balanced feeding,” Cowieson noted, “but now we can do it with a level of precision that wasn’t possible before.”

Why is this crucial? Because efficiency is key to sustainability. In broiler production, every small gain in performance leads to reduced environmental impact, better feed conversion, and improved accessibility of chicken meat—especially vital as global demand continues to rise.

Through precision feeding, producers can now significantly enhance performance outcomes while also lowering their footprint, making poultry production both more profitable and more environmentally responsible.
