Istanbul Offers a Global Stage for the World Buiatrics Congress

01/07/2026

As Türkiye prepares to host the 33rd World Buiatrics Congress, Prof. Dr. Hidir Gencoglu says the event will bring international scientific exchange, field expertise and local veterinary knowledge together in Istanbul.

Speaking to The Animal Economics, Gencoglu reflected on his presentation at the 32nd World Buiatrics Congress, held in Cancun, Mexico, in 2024. He said representing Türkiye at such a major international meeting was a source of pride, especially given the strong interest and positive feedback received after the presentation.

That experience, he noted, has now become part of the momentum behind bringing the Congress to Türkiye.

“Now we are carrying that excitement to our own Congress in Türkiye,” he said, pointing to strong interest from participants, the livestock sector and professional stakeholders.

Hosting the Congress required extensive preparation, including scientific engagement and international lobbying efforts. According to Gencoglu, the decision to hold the event in Istanbul was driven mainly by accessibility.

Although he said Antalya had initially been his personal preference, Istanbul was ultimately the more practical choice for an event of this scale. The city’s international flight connections make it easier for delegates to travel directly from a wide range of countries.

Istanbul also offers an additional advantage as a destination that many international visitors want to experience beyond the scientific programme.

The Congress will feature a broad international speaker line-up, but Turkish scientists will also have a visible role. Gencoglu said seven Turkish academics will deliver invited presentations, representing both field experience and scientific work carried out in Türkiye.

The programme is expected to include 58 invited presentations, alongside 11 private-sector presentations. In total, close to 70 sessions will bring together leading experts working in bovine medicine, livestock production and veterinary science.

For Gencoglu, the Congress will provide value for a wide professional audience. Academics, practicing veterinarians and livestock professionals are all expected to find sessions relevant to their work.

He said the event will give participants the opportunity to access current developments in bovine health and production directly from internationally recognised experts, while also creating a space for exchange between science and field practice.

The 33rd World Buiatrics Congress in Istanbul is expected to be more than a scientific meeting. It will also be an opportunity for Türkiye to showcase its veterinary expertise and strengthen its place within the global livestock-health community.
