Pet owners continue to prioritise spending on their animals’ health and wellbeing despite ongoing economic pressures, reinforcing the resilience of the companion animal market, according to new consumer research highlighted by Elanco Animal Health.
The survey of 1,409 U.S. pet owners, conducted in late May and released on 3 June, found that 91% of respondents have maintained or increased their spending on pet health and wellness products in recent years. More than one-third (38%) reported spending more, while 90% expect their expenditure to remain stable or increase over the next 12 months.
The findings suggest that veterinary care and preventive healthcare continue to be viewed as essential household expenses rather than discretionary purchases. According to the survey, 95% of pet owners said they would not reduce spending on their pets’ health because of financial pressure, instead choosing to cut back on categories such as dining out, travel or personal spending if necessary.
The research also reflects the continuing evolution of the human-animal bond. Nearly nine in ten respondents (88%) said their pet’s happiness and wellbeing is as important as their own, reinforcing long-term demand for products and services that support healthier and longer lives for companion animals.
Beyond consumer behaviour, the findings point to broader opportunities across the companion animal sector. Demand for veterinary services, preventive healthcare, diagnostics and innovative therapies continues to support industry growth, even as household budgets remain under pressure.
Elanco noted that the global animal health industry has demonstrated consistent long-term resilience, averaging around 5% annual growth over the past two decades. The company estimates the sector expanded by approximately 7% in 2025 and projects the global animal health market to grow from approximately $42 billion in 2025 to around $60 billion over the next decade.
For companies operating in the companion animal sector, the latest survey reinforces that pet healthcare continues to be one of the most resilient categories within consumer spending, supported by owners’ growing willingness to invest in preventive care, innovation and improved quality of life for their animals.
