Purina expands pet nutrition focus with digestive and senior formulas

30/04/2026

Purina Pro Plan has introduced a new line of dog and cat formulas focused on digestive health and senior pet support, reflecting the growing role of targeted nutrition in the companion animal sector.

The new range includes formulas for adult and senior dogs and cats, with a focus on areas such as digestive balance, immune support, mobility, cognition and overall wellbeing in older pets. According to Purina, the digestive support formulas combine prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics, while the senior formulas are developed to support healthy aging in pets.

From the perspective of the pet nutrition market, the launch points to a broader shift in how pet food brands are building value. Nutrition is increasingly moving beyond basic life-stage feeding and becoming more specific, with diets designed around gut health, age-related needs and preventive wellness. This reflects a consumer environment in which pet owners are more attentive to long-term health outcomes and more willing to look for products that address particular needs.

Digestive health has become one of the most important functional areas in pet nutrition because it connects closely with everyday observations made by pet owners. Stool quality, appetite, comfort, nutrient absorption and general vitality are all areas where owners may quickly notice changes. For this reason, gut health gives pet food companies a practical way to link nutrition with visible wellbeing, while also supporting a more science-led communication strategy.

The inclusion of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics also shows how concepts from human nutrition continue to influence companion animal diets. As pet owners become more familiar with the microbiome and digestive balance in their own health routines, similar language is increasingly being transferred to pet nutrition. This does not only shape product development, but also affects how brands explain value to consumers in a crowded premium market.

The senior pet segment is another important part of this development. As dogs and cats live longer and owners seek to maintain quality of life into older age, nutrition designed for mobility, cognitive function, immune support and general resilience is gaining commercial relevance. Senior formulas also allow brands to address a more emotionally driven part of pet care, where owners are looking for ways to support pets through later life stages.

For veterinarians and retailers, this type of product development can also make conversations around daily nutrition more specific. Instead of positioning food only by species, size or age, brands are increasingly creating diets around functional needs. This can help differentiate products at shelf level and in online channels, where pet owners compare benefits more closely before purchasing.

For Purina, the launch strengthens its position in premium pet nutrition, particularly in categories where health-related benefits are central to purchasing decisions. For the wider pet food industry, it highlights the continued rise of targeted nutrition as a growth driver, especially in formulas that connect daily feeding with digestive resilience and healthy aging.
