Sangrovit Enters Its Third Generation with Patented Alkaloid Technology

Phytobiotics GmbH has introduced the third generation of Sangrovit, positioning the Macleaya cordata-based feed additive as a broader animal resilience and production-quality platform.

The new generation combines five biologically active alkaloids in a scientifically optimized formulation. The disclosed components include sanguinarine, chelerythrine, allocryptopine and canadine, with canadine representing one of the most important additions to the updated technology.

According to Phytobiotics, canadine has been incorporated through natural breeding and standardization work. Its inclusion is intended to extend the product’s application beyond conventional performance parameters, supporting animals under stressful production conditions and contributing to the management of inflammatory pressure and carcass-related characteristics.

The formulation also uses a protective structure based on natural activated waxes. This technology is designed to protect sensitive alkaloids against oxidation and support their gradual, controlled release throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The objective is to improve the stability and bioavailability of the active compounds while supporting intestinal integrity, digestive function and performance under variable production conditions.

These functions are increasingly relevant as livestock performance is no longer measured solely through weight gain or feed conversion. Heat stress, feed changes, pathogen pressure, intensive production and management-related challenges can initially affect the gastrointestinal system. A weakened intestinal barrier may subsequently influence feed intake, digestive efficiency, inflammatory load and flock or herd uniformity.

The new European patent also covers applications connected with carcass quality, processing value and quality-related performance. The highlighted areas include abdominal fat deposition, fat-to-muscle ratio, carcass characteristics, oxidative stability, yield and classification consistency.

This expands the economic proposition behind the technology. Rather than focusing exclusively on farm-level performance, Phytobiotics is positioning the third-generation platform as a tool that may support value creation from animal production through processing.

The scientific background of the Sangrovit platform includes an EFSA assessment of Sangrovit Extra, an earlier Macleaya cordata-based product. Under the evaluated conditions of use, EFSA concluded that the additive had the potential to improve the performance of chickens for fattening. That assessment relates specifically to Sangrovit Extra and should not be interpreted as a separate EFSA authorization of every claim associated with the third-generation formulation.

Phytobiotics says its integrated production system—from seed optimization and harvesting to extraction, formulation, packaging and distribution—supports product traceability, standardization and consistent quality.

For producers, the third-generation technology reflects a wider shift in animal nutrition: moving beyond maximum output towards resilient animals, stable performance and products with greater processing and market value.
