Türkiye is preparing to host the 33rd World Buiatrics Congress in Istanbul, with organisers expecting one of the largest gatherings in the event’s history.
Speaking to The Animal Economics, Prof. Dr. Hasan Batmaz said excitement has grown steadily since Istanbul was selected in Madrid. Strong sector interest, high registration figures and nearly 1,000 submitted abstracts have increased both enthusiasm and responsibility for the organising team.
The Congress has already reached around 2,500 registered participants. With abstract presenters included, the final attendance is expected to exceed 3,500 and could approach 4,000 delegates.
Batmaz said this level of participation could mark a record for Türkiye’s animal-health sector and may also place the Istanbul meeting among the most highly attended Buiatrics Congresses held in Europe.
The scientific programme will include 58 invited presentations by leading researchers. Alongside established cattle-health topics, sessions will cover One Health, heat stress, microbiota and other emerging areas.
The programme will not focus only on cattle. It will also address other ruminant species, particularly sheep and goats, offering participants access to new scientific perspectives across livestock health and production.
Infectious diseases are expected to be a major part of the Congress agenda. Batmaz noted that disease challenges are not limited to Türkiye and remain a serious concern across neighbouring regions and globally.
Seven invited presentations will address infectious diseases. Two of these will focus specifically on foot-and-mouth disease, including one session on future vaccination approaches and another on the World Organisation for Animal Health’s global response to the disease.
Private-sector support is also playing a significant role in the Congress organisation. Batmaz thanked both global and national companies supporting the event, describing them as essential to its delivery. He also invited companies that have not yet confirmed sponsorship to consider joining the Congress.
The event will also be an important milestone for the Farm Animal Veterinarians Association. Founded 12 years ago, the association is now bringing the World Buiatrics Congress to Türkiye for the first time.
Batmaz stressed that the Congress should not be seen only as an association event, but as a congress for Türkiye. With participants expected from many countries, he said the event has the potential to strengthen Türkiye’s international visibility through its scientific programme, social activities and Istanbul’s historical and natural attractions.
